How Many Watch Straps Do You Need? The Short Answer for One Watch

How Many Watch Straps Do You Need? The Short Answer for One Watch - Helvetus

The short answer: for one watch, three straps cover almost everything. One that can get wet, one you can wear to work, and one for the weekend. Some watches only need two, and very few people need more than five. Below is how to work out your number, and which three to start with.

If you want the full long-term plan, with buying order and budgets for 1, 3, 5 and 7 straps, read our watch strap wardrobe guide. This page is the quick answer.

The three-strap rule

Most people wear a watch in three situations: in water or heat, at work, and off duty. One strap rarely does all three well, so each strap covers one of them.

  1. The all-weather strap: FKM rubber. For swimming, sport, summer and travel. It does not mind sweat or water, and it is easy to clean. Our curved FKM rubber straps carry a lifetime warranty on the rubber.
  2. The work strap: leather. Smooth black or brown leather sits under a cuff and goes with a suit. See leather watch straps, or alligator leather for a dressier watch.
  3. The weekend strap: sailcloth or suede. Texture and colour, for jeans and a jacket. See sailcloth straps or suede straps.

When two straps are enough

  • A dress watch that never sees water: two leathers, one black and one brown, are plenty.
  • A dive watch you wear casually: rubber plus sailcloth covers it. Add leather only if you wear it to the office.
  • A watch on a steel bracelet: the bracelet already covers work and everyday. One rubber strap for summer and sport is usually the only addition you need. Our bracelet vs strap guide explains the trade-off.

When more than three makes sense

Four or five straps make sense if you wear one watch every day and want it to look different through the week, or if colour matters to you, for example matching a dial accent. Beyond five, most straps end up in a drawer. Rotation does have one practical benefit: each strap wears more slowly, so leather in a rotation lasts much longer than leather worn daily. See when to replace a watch strap for typical lifespans.

Make swapping easy, or you will not do it

Three straps only help if changing them is quick. Straps with quick-release spring bars change in seconds without tools. Otherwise a proper spring bar tool takes the risk out of scratching your lugs: see our strap tools and quick-release spring bars explained.

Before you buy

  • Check your lug width first: how to measure lug width. If it is 22mm, see our 22mm strap guide.
  • Pick colours that work with your dial, not just your clothes.
  • Start with the strap you will wear most, usually the rubber in summer and the leather in winter.
