22mm Watch Strap Guide – Fit, Materials and Which Watches Take 22mm

22mm Watch Strap Guide – Fit, Materials and Which Watches Take 22mm - Helvetus

22mm is the most common lug width on modern sports watches. Divers, chronographs, pilot watches and a large share of 40–44mm cases all use it, which is why "22mm watch strap" is one of the most searched strap sizes there is. It also means there are more 22mm straps on the market than any other size, and more ways to buy the wrong one. This guide covers how to confirm your watch is really 22mm, the watches that usually are, and how to choose the end shape and material.

Step 1: Confirm your watch is actually 22mm

Lug width is the inside distance between the two lugs, where the spring bar sits. Measure it with a caliper or a ruler with millimetre marks, straight across, between the inner faces of the lugs. Do not measure the case diameter or the width of the strap at the buckle. Our lug width measuring guide walks through it step by step.

The common mistake: a 21mm or 23mm watch measured quickly looks like 22mm. A 21mm watch on a 22mm strap will not close between the lugs, and a 23mm watch on a 22mm strap leaves a visible gap on both sides. If your reading is not a clean 22.0mm, measure twice and check the reference number of your watch.

Watches that usually take a 22mm strap

  • Dive watches around 41–44mm: most Seiko divers (Turtle, Samurai, SKX), Tudor Black Bay and Pelagos models, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean and many Longines HydroConquest references.
  • Chronographs and pilot watches: many Breitling, TAG Heuer and IWC pilot references, plus a large number of 42mm chronographs.
  • Tool and field watches: many Hamilton Khaki and Bell & Ross references, depending on case size.

Brands change lug widths between generations, so treat this list as a starting point, not a guarantee. For a model-specific answer, look at our model strap guides such as the Tudor Pelagos 42 strap guide, or the general watch strap sizing guide.

Curved end or straight end?

Once the width is right, the end shape decides how the strap sits against the case.

  • Curved end: the strap end follows the curve of the case, so there is no gap between strap and case. It looks closer to a factory fit on most round sports watches. See our curved FKM rubber straps, which come in 22mm.
  • Straight end: a flat end with a small visible gap to the case. It fits almost any watch with 22mm lugs, including cases with unusual lug shapes, and it is easier to fit. See our straight FKM rubber straps in 20, 22 and 24mm.

Which material for a 22mm strap?

22mm watches are mostly sports watches, so the material question is mostly about what you do while wearing it.

  • FKM rubber: the best all-round choice for a 22mm diver or sports watch. It handles water, sweat and heat, and does not pick up dust like cheaper silicone. Our FKM rubber straps carry a lifetime warranty on the rubber. More detail in the best strap for swimming and sweat.
  • Leather: the right call for a 22mm chronograph or pilot watch worn in the office. Keep it away from water. See leather watch straps (1-year warranty).
  • Sailcloth: the texture of fabric with a rubber core, a good middle ground for weekends. See sailcloth watch straps.

Strap length and buckle width

A 22mm strap usually tapers to 20mm or 18mm at the buckle. Taper changes the look more than people expect: little or no taper reads sporty, more taper reads dressy. For length, most straps come in a standard size that fits wrists of roughly 16–20cm. Our strap length guide covers smaller and larger wrists.

Fitting a 22mm strap

Most 22mm watches use standard spring bars. A spring bar tool makes the swap a two-minute job without scratching the lugs; see our watch strap tools. If your strap has quick-release pins, no tool is needed. More on that in quick-release spring bars explained.

Quick checklist

  1. Measure the lugs: a clean 22.0mm.
  2. Choose curved end for a seamless look, straight end for the widest fit.
  3. Pick the material for how you wear the watch: rubber for water and heat, leather for dress, sailcloth for casual.
  4. Check the buckle width and length.
