Every product page uses terms — lug width, end-fit, keepers, deployant, taper, ardillon, NATO, integrated, free loop — that buyers are expected to already know. Most don't. The result is buyers picking the wrong size, the wrong end-fit, or the wrong closure type because they didn't know what they were looking at when they ordered.

Every term you'll encounter on a watch strap product page, every part of a strap that has a name, and every measurement that affects fit — defined, explained, and put in context for actual buying decisions. The Watch Side: Where the Strap Meets the Case
This is the part of the strap that attaches to the watch. The terms here matter most because getting them wrong means the strap doesn't fit or doesn't sit right.
Lug. The metal protrusions extending from the watch case at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions, where the strap or bracelet attaches. Most watches have four lugs total (two pairs). Lugs are integral to the case — they're machined from the same piece of metal — and their shape, length, and clearance from the case interior determine which straps fit and how they look.
Lug width. The single most important strap measurement. The distance between the two lugs at one end of the watch (the gap that the strap end has to fit into). Measured in millimetres. Common sizes: 16mm, 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm, 24mm. A 20mm strap fits a 20mm watch and won't fit a 22mm watch — width is binary, not approximate. Most luxury sport watches are 20mm or 21mm; pilot watches are typically 20mm or 22mm; dress watches range from 18mm to 20mm; ladies' watches go down to 12mm or 14mm.
Lug-to-lug. The distance from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom lugs — the total length of the watch's case including the lugs. Measured in millimetres. Affects how the watch wears on different wrist sizes (a 50mm lug-to-lug watch on a 160mm wrist will overhang the wrist edges) and affects how much usable strap length you have left after the strap spans the case.
Lug hole. Small holes drilled through the inside of each lug, where the spring bar tips lock in to hold the strap. Most modern watches have closed lug holes (drilled inward only); some have drilled lugs with holes also drilled through the outside of the lug, allowing spring bars to be pushed in or out from the outside with a pin tool.
End-fit. The shape of the strap end where it sits between the lugs. Two main types:
- Straight end: The strap end is cut flat, perpendicular to the strap length. Universal-fit; works on any watch with the right lug width. Leaves a small visible gap between the strap end and the case. Traditional cut, used on most leather straps and most universal-fit aftermarket straps.
- Curved end: The strap end is cut in a concave curve that matches the profile of a specific watch case. Sits flush against the case with no visible gap. Reference-specific — a curved end cut for a Submariner won't match a Speedmaster. Used on most modern luxury sport watch OEM straps and premium aftermarket straps.
Integrated bracelet/strap. A strap or bracelet whose end is engineered specifically to flow into the case as a single visual element, with no traditional spring-bar attachment in the conventional sense. Patek Philippe Nautilus, AP Royal Oak, Vacheron Overseas, and Rolex Oysterflex all have integrated systems. Aftermarket options for integrated-bracelet watches are more limited and reference-specific.
Spring bar. The small metal cylinder that holds the strap to the watch. Contains a spring that pushes two pins outward into the lug holes. Standard sizes: 16mm to 24mm wide, 1.5mm or 1.8mm body diameter, 316L stainless steel construction. The single most important component you don't see — every strap is held to the watch by spring bars.
Quick-release spring bar (QRSB). A spring bar with a small lever or knob on the side that lets you retract one of the pins by pushing the lever. Eliminates the need for a spring bar tool — installation and removal of the strap takes 30 seconds without any tools. Standard on most modern premium aftermarket straps. The lever sits invisibly on the underside of the strap when worn.
Fixed bar / bonklip / fixed lug. A spring bar that's permanently mounted in the watch case (not removable). Used on some vintage watches and most military/field watches. Forces the use of one-piece pass-through straps (NATO, perlon, single-pass nylon) because the strap has to thread through a non-removable bar.
Drilled lugs. Lugs with holes drilled all the way through the outside of the case, allowing a pin tool to push the spring bar in from the outside. Found on some sport watches (Submariner pre-1610x references, certain Tudor and IWC sport models). Makes strap changes faster but adds a small visible hole on the outside of the case.
The Strap Body: The Part That Actually Wraps Your Wrist
The middle section of the strap, between the lug end and the buckle. This is where material, length, taper, and stitching all live.
Material. What the strap is physically made of. Major categories: leather (calfskin, alligator, suede, ostrich, exotic), rubber (FKM/fluoroelastomer is the premium standard, silicone is the budget alternative), fabric (NATO, perlon, sailcloth, denim), and metal (stainless steel, mesh, titanium, gold). Each material has different durability, weather tolerance, comfort, and price profile.
FKM (fluoroelastomer). The premium synthetic rubber used in luxury watch straps. The same material Rolex uses in Oysterflex. Highly durable, fully waterproof, UV-resistant, and chemical-resistant. Lasts 5–10+ years of daily wear. Premium aftermarket rubber straps use FKM; cheap rubber straps use silicone.
Sailcloth. A technical woven fabric (typically nylon or polyester) that mimics the texture of yacht sail canvas. Lightweight, water-resistant, durable. Often paired with a leather lining for comfort. Associated with the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms heritage; suits dive watches and sport-luxury hybrids.
Length. The total measurement of the strap, given as two numbers separated by a slash. Format: long end / short end (e.g., 120/75mm). The long end is the side with adjustment holes; the short end is the side the buckle is attached to. Total strap length = long + short + buckle thickness. Common length tiers: Short (around 110/70mm), Regular (around 120/75mm), Long (around 125/80mm).
Taper. The narrowing of the strap from the lug end to the buckle end. Given as two numbers (e.g., 22/18mm — 22mm at the lugs, narrowing to 18mm at the buckle). Most premium straps taper 2–4mm from lugs to buckle for visual proportion. Non-tapered straps are the same width throughout (e.g., 22/22mm), more common on sport watches and tool watches.
Lining. The inner layer of the strap that touches your skin. Usually softer than the outer material — calfskin lining on leather straps, microfibre or technical fabric on sailcloth and sport straps, leather lining on premium FKM rubber. Quality lining is the difference between a comfortable strap and one that chafes.
Stitching. The thread that holds the strap layers together. Two visual approaches:
- Tonal stitching: Thread colour matches the strap (black thread on black leather). Subtle, dressy, monochromatic appearance.
- Contrast stitching: Thread colour deliberately different from the strap (white thread on black leather, red on tan). Decorative, sporty, more visible.
Quality stitching is hand-stitched with waxed thread (more durable, water-resistant) or precision machine-stitched. Cheap stitching is machine-only with thin polyester thread that fails within 1–2 years.
Padding. Internal stiffening or cushioning material in the strap. Common on dress and sport leather straps. Padded straps have visible thickness and a curved cross-section. Unpadded or flat straps are thin and lay flat against the wrist.
Edges. How the strap edges are finished. Three approaches:
- Painted edges: Sealed with edge paint, hand-buffed for a smooth finish. Most common on dress and premium leather straps.
- Folded edges: The strap material is folded and stitched on itself, hiding the raw edge inside. Most durable, most expensive to manufacture.
- Raw/cut edges: The edge is simply cut and left unfinished. Most casual, lowest cost, most prone to fraying or wear.
Adjustment holes. The series of small holes punched into the long end of the strap, used to size the strap to your wrist. Standard count: 6–9 holes per strap, spaced 4–6mm apart. More holes = finer sizing adjustment; fewer holes = coarser sizing.
Keeper / loop. Small loops that hold the loose tail of the strap in place after fastening. Two types:
- Fixed keeper / fixed loop: Permanently sewn or attached to the strap's short end. Doesn't move along the strap.
- Free loop / floating keeper: Slides freely along the strap and can be positioned anywhere. Allows fine adjustment of where the tail sits.
Most premium straps include both — one fixed keeper near the buckle and one free loop further along.
CTS / cut-to-size. Straps designed to be trimmed to your exact wrist length using a sharp craft knife. The same principle Patek Philippe uses on the Aquanaut. Allows custom length fitting at home. Available primarily in FKM rubber.
The Buckle Side: How the Strap Closes
The fastening end of the strap. This is where the choice of closure type meaningfully affects the strap's behaviour.
Tang buckle. Also called pin buckle or ardillon buckle ("ardillon" is French for "tongue"). The simplest closure design — a metal frame with a hinged pin that passes through one of the strap's adjustment holes. Mechanically identical to a belt buckle. Lightweight, comfortable, low-profile. Doesn't preserve strap longevity as well as a deployant. Used on roughly 80% of leather and rubber straps shipped today.
Deployant clasp. Also called deployment clasp or "boucle déployante" in original French. A folding metal closure that hinges open to release the strap and folds shut to fasten it. The strap forms a continuous loop without bending sharply at a buckle hole. Patented by Cartier in 1909. Better for strap longevity (3–5x lifespan vs tang buckle), better for drop safety, more convenient on/off. Three main variants:
- Single-fold deployant: One hinged section. Most common in dress watches. Lower profile.
- Butterfly clasp: Two symmetrical hinged sections that open from a central axis. Cleaner topside appearance.
- Push-button deployant: Either of the above with side-mounted release buttons. Most secure variant; standard on dive watches and sport watches.
Micro-adjust deployant. A deployant with a built-in extension or stepped adjustment mechanism that allows fine-tuning of strap length without removing the strap. Rolex's Glidelock (5mm of stepped extension), Omega's diver extension, Cartier's QuickSwitch, and AP's adjustable clasp are examples. Handles seasonal wrist swelling cleanly.
Buckle width / clasp width. The width of the strap end where the buckle attaches, given in mm. Different from lug width — a 22/18mm strap has a 22mm lug end and an 18mm buckle. The buckle hardware must match the buckle-end width of the strap.
Buckle/clasp metal finish. The visual finish of the metal hardware:
- Brushed steel: Matte, satin finish. Most common on sport watches.
- Polished steel: Mirror-bright finish. Most common on dress watches.
- Two-tone: Combination of finishes (often brushed top with polished sides). Common on Rolex bracelets and dressier sport watches.
- PVD coating: Physical Vapor Deposition coating in black, gold, or other colours. Wear-resistant decorative coating.
The buckle finish should generally match the watch case finish — brushed for brushed cases, polished for polished, gold-tone for gold cases.
Materials Glossary
The terminology specific to strap materials. Each of these has a fuller treatment in our materials guide, but here's the quick definitional reference.
Calfskin / calf leather. The most common premium strap leather. Smooth, supple, takes patina well. From cattle hide, full-grain or top-grain quality. The default dress and dressy-casual leather.
Italian leather. Calfskin tanned in Italian tanneries, often using vegetable-tanning processes. Generally premium quality with refined finishes. Brands like Pellesta, Tanneries Roux, and others source from Italian or French tanneries.
Saffiano. A specific type of textured calfskin originally developed by Prada — a fine cross-hatch pattern stamped into the leather surface. Distinctive look, scratch-resistant, holds shape well.
Barenia. A French leather tanned by the Hermès Tanneries. Soft, supple, develops a beautiful patina. The leather Hermès uses on saddles and high-end straps. Premium tier.
Box calf. Calfskin tanned with a glossy chrome-tannage finish. Smooth, refined, slightly more formal than other calfskin. Common on dress watch straps.
Alligator. Genuine American alligator hide (Alligator mississippiensis). Distinctive square-scale pattern on belly cuts. The textbook luxury dress watch leather. CITES-regulated.
Crocodile. Genuine crocodile hide from species including Nile crocodile, saltwater crocodile, and Siamese crocodile. Distinguished from alligator by the visible sensory pore in the centre of each scale. Different commercial tiers (Nile and saltwater are premium; Siamese is mid-tier; caiman is entry-tier).
Suede. Calfskin or cowhide with the inner side buffed to create a soft fuzzy nap. Casual luxury register. Water-vulnerable. Best as a rotation strap, not daily wear.
Nubuck. Similar to suede but buffed on the outer side of the hide rather than the inner side. Slightly more durable than suede, slightly less velvet-like.
Ostrich. Genuine ostrich leather with the distinctive raised quill follicles (the bumps where feathers used to attach). Distinctive texture. Vintage and dress register.
Embossed calfskin. Calfskin with a scale pattern stamped or embossed into the surface to mimic alligator or crocodile. Honest mid-tier alternative when sold as such; problematic when sold dishonestly as genuine reptile.
FKM rubber. Fluoroelastomer. The premium synthetic rubber used in luxury watch straps. Highly durable, fully waterproof, chemical-resistant, UV-resistant.
Silicone. A different synthetic rubber, more porous than FKM, more prone to dust attraction, odour absorption, and yellowing. Cheaper than FKM but inferior in nearly every way for luxury watches.
Vulcanised rubber. Natural or synthetic rubber that's been heat-treated with sulphur to improve durability and elasticity. Standard process for premium rubber straps.
MarinerTex. Helvetus's branded sailcloth construction — high-density technical weave on the show side, leather lining on the wrist side.
DenimaTex. Helvetus's branded denim strap construction — purpose-woven cotton denim with reinforced edges and quick-release hardware.
NATO / G10. Originally a British Ministry of Defence specification ("NATO" was the supply group code, not the actual military). One-piece nylon strap that passes underneath the watch case and through both spring bars. Cheap, durable, casual.
Perlon. A braided nylon weave, often German-made (the original brand name dates to the 1950s). Lightweight and breathable; the buckle pin passes through the weave at any point rather than through pre-cut holes. Casual register.
Tropic strap. Originally a 1960s rubber strap design with a small cross-hatch pattern and spring bar attachments. Modern revival popular in vintage-style aesthetic. Pioneered alongside early Rolex Submariners and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.
Marine Nationale (MN). A specific French military strap design, originally developed for the Nageurs de Combat (Combat Swimmers) — the same unit that drove the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms development. Stretchy nylon webbing, single-pass design.
ZULU. A heavier, single-piece nylon strap variant with thicker hardware than NATO. More substantial feel, more secure on larger watches.
Hardware and Tools Glossary
The components beyond the strap itself.
Spring bar tool. A small handheld tool with a forked end and a pin end, used to compress and release spring bars during strap changes. Bergeon makes the watchmaker-grade reference (the 6767-F). Essential for any strap that doesn't have quick-release spring bars.
Loupe. A small magnifying glass (typically 10x to 30x) used to inspect watch movements, hallmarks, and small parts. Useful for examining strap stitching quality and spring bar fitment.
Caliper. A precision measurement tool used to measure lug width and other small dimensions. Digital calipers display measurements directly; vernier calipers are read manually. Standard tool for precise strap fitting.
End link. On metal bracelets, the first piece of the bracelet that connects to the watch lugs. Two types: solid end links (SEL) are single thick pieces of metal, more premium; hollow end links are thin folded metal, less premium but lighter.
Pin / link pin. On metal bracelets, the small pins that connect individual links. Removed with a specialist tool to resize a bracelet for the wrist.
Half-link. On metal bracelets, a smaller link that allows fine sizing adjustment between full links. Most luxury bracelets have one or two half-links specifically for this purpose.
Buying-Decision Glossary
The terms that show up on product pages and matter for ordering correctly.
Reference. The specific model number of a watch (e.g., Rolex 116610LN, Cartier WSSA0010). Different references have different lug widths, end-fit profiles, and case designs. Aftermarket curved-end straps are reference-specific.
Fitment. Whether a strap is engineered to fit a specific watch reference. Specific fitment = curved end cut for one or a few references. Universal fitment = straight end, fits any watch with matching lug width.
OEM. Original Equipment Manufacturer. The watch maker's own straps and bracelets. "OEM bracelet" = the bracelet that came with the watch from the factory.
Aftermarket. Any strap or component not made by the original watch manufacturer. Aftermarket straps from established makers (Helvetus, Rubber B, Crafter Blue, Everest, Delugs) are typically high-quality alternatives to OEM at lower prices.
OEM-fit. An aftermarket strap engineered to match the OEM strap or bracelet's exact attachment specifications. The closest aftermarket option to a factory-original look.
Lug-tip-to-lug-tip / horns. Older terminology for lug-to-lug measurement. "Horns" was a common term for lugs in vintage watch literature.
A Note on Industry Jargon
A few terms get used inconsistently in the industry, worth flagging:
Strap vs band vs bracelet. "Bracelet" almost always means metal. "Strap" typically means leather, rubber, or fabric. "Band" is used informally for both, more common in casual or US English ("watch band").
Buckle vs clasp. Used interchangeably in casual conversation. Technically: "buckle" usually refers to tang/pin closures; "clasp" usually refers to deployant and folding closures. Many product pages use either term for either type.
Deployant vs deployment. Both terms appear. "Deployant" is the original French word and is more commonly used in horology circles. "Deployment" is the English variant and is more common in casual or marketing copy. They mean the same thing.
Curved vs contoured vs case-fit. All three terms appear on product pages to describe a strap engineered to follow a specific case profile. They mean essentially the same thing.
Width measurement convention. Strap width is given as lug width / buckle width (e.g., 22/18mm). Sometimes only one number appears (e.g., "20mm strap") — when only one number is given, it usually refers to the lug width, with the buckle width being assumed proportional.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the most important measurement on a strap product page? Lug width. It's the binary fit — wrong lug width and the strap simply won't attach. After lug width, length matters most for comfort. End-fit (curved or straight) matters most for visual integration with the watch.

It affects visual proportion and slightly affects comfort. Tapered straps look more refined; non-tapered straps look more sport/tool. Both are valid choices.
Are spring bars universal across watch brands? Mostly yes — standard spring bars (1.5mm or 1.8mm body, length matched to lug width) fit any watch with standard lug holes. Some brands (Seiko, certain vintage references) use specialty "fat" spring bars with thicker tips. Always verify before swapping.
