Some watches come with a bracelet and a strap. The Tank Louis Cartier has only ever come one way: on leather. That single design decision is what makes this reference so interesting to own, and it is also the reason almost every owner ends up buying a strap at some point.
The W1529756 is the large model in 18K yellow gold, running a quartz movement with a small calendar aperture at 3 o'clock. Cartier now lists the same watch under the reference WGTA0067, so if your warranty card shows one number and a dealer listing shows the other, you are looking at the same case: 33.7 mm by 25.5 mm, roughly 6.35 mm thick, with the beaded crown set with a sapphire cabochon, a grained silvered dial, Roman numerals and blued-steel sword hands.
It is a watch that rewards a good strap and punishes a bad one. Below is the correct size, the traps to avoid, and the four leather colours that work best on a yellow gold case.
Lug Width: the W1529756 takes a 19 mm strap
On the product page, select the 19 mm option.
The large-model Tank case — 33.7 x 25.5 mm — uses a 19 mm lug width. That figure is consistent across the Tank family: Cartier's large Tank cases (Tank Louis Cartier and Tank Must alike) are 19 mm, the small models are 16 mm, and the XL models are 23 mm. We cross-checked it against independent strap makers, owner measurements on the enthusiast forums, and our own Tank Must WSTA0041 guide, which uses the same case footprint.
A few things worth knowing before you order:
- Standard spring bars. There is no QuickSwitch or proprietary attachment on this reference. A spring bar tool, or our matching installation tool, is all you need.
- Shape matters more than width. Cartier's own Tank straps are cut with contoured ends that follow the curve of the brancards. A generic straight-cut 19 mm strap will technically fit and still look wrong, because you will see daylight where the strap meets the case. Every strap in our Tank collection is cut for that case profile.
- Thickness matters too. At around 6.35 mm, this is one of the slimmest watches Cartier makes. A thick, padded strap adds visual weight the case cannot carry. Slim leather keeps the Art Deco proportions intact.
Make sure you have the large model
Three quick checks before you order, because the Tank line has several sizes that look nearly identical in photos:
| Your case measures | Model | Strap size |
|---|---|---|
| 33.7 x 25.5 mm | Large (W1529756 / WGTA0067) | 19 mm |
| 29.5 x 22 mm | Small | 16 mm |
| Larger, XL proportions | Extra Large | 23 mm |
One extra note: Cartier also catalogues a large-model Tank Louis Cartier with an automatic movement whose case measures 38.1 x 27.75 mm. That is a different, bigger case — if your caliper reads 27.75 mm across, do not order 19 mm.
Why the strap is the part that decides everything
There has never been a Tank Louis Cartier on a metal bracelet. The leather is not an accessory to the watch; it is half of the watch. And leather is the one component with an expiry date. The factory alligator creases at the lug ends, darkens where it meets your skin, and after a couple of years of regular wear it starts to let the case down long before the case shows any wear at all.
Replacing it at a boutique is its own kind of decision. Replacing it with a strap cut for the same case is not.
There is also a quieter argument: a gold Tank on a fresh strap reads completely differently depending on the colour you choose. The case never changes. The strap is the only variable you actually control — which is why most owners who buy one end up buying two.
The four best strap colours for the yellow gold Tank Louis
Cartier has shipped this reference on brown alligator, and the current catalogue version on a dark grey alligator. Gold, though, has a long-established set of partners, and these four are consistently the ones our Tank customers come back for.
1. Brown leather — the classic gold pairing
Brown Leather Strap for Cartier Tank / Tank Louis
This is the safest and by some distance the most popular choice for a yellow gold Tank, and for good reason: warm brown and yellow gold share the same temperature. The gold looks richer rather than louder, the silvered dial stays the brightest thing on the wrist, and the whole watch reads exactly the way it was drawn in 1922.
If you buy one strap for this watch, buy this one — and see the buckle note below, because on a gold case it changes the result completely.
2. Black leather — for the evening version of the watch

Black and gold is the oldest formal combination there is. Where brown softens the case, black sharpens it: more contrast, more separation between strap and metal, a cleaner line under a cuff. It is the strap most owners reach for when the watch is going out rather than going to work, and it is one of our best sellers across the entire Tank collection.
3. Blue leather — picking up the details Cartier built in

Look closely at this reference and there is already blue on it: the blued-steel sword hands and the sapphire cabochon in the crown. A deep blue strap pulls both of those details forward and gives the watch a modern, slightly less formal character without touching its elegance. It is the choice for owners who want their Tank to look considered rather than inherited.
4. Green leather — the one people notice
Green Leather Strap for Cartier Tank / Tank Louis
Green against yellow gold has become one of the most requested combinations in dress watches over the last few years, and it works particularly well on a small rectangular case, where the colour reads as a detail rather than a statement. It is the strap that makes a very traditional watch feel like a personal one.
You can see every colour and finish, including grained leather, in our Cartier Tank, Tank Louis, Américaine, Solo and Must strap collection.
Choose the gold buckle
On the product page you also select a buckle finish. For the W1529756 the answer is straightforward: gold. A silver buckle on an 18K yellow gold case is the single most common mistake we see on this reference — it is the only part of the strap that sits in plain view next to the case on your wrist, and mismatched metal is instantly visible in photos.
Silver and rose gold are there for the steel and rose gold Tanks. For this one, gold.
Fit, in one line
Order 19 mm, choose the gold buckle, and fit it with standard spring bars.

Finish your Tank Louis properly
Helvetus straps are made for one watch at a time. The Tank straps are cut for the Tank case, in every lug width from 14 mm to 25 mm, so the strap sits flush against the brancards instead of hanging off a pair of spring bars.
